Study Sheds Light On Oklahoma Teen Trends

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma -- About half of all Oklahoma high school students say they have had sex, tried cigarettes and consumed alcohol, according to a survey released Thursday by the state Board of Education.

The Oklahoma Youth Risk Behavior Survey polled 1,384 students in grades 9-12 from 36 schools.

It was the first year for Oklahoma students to participate in the study, conducted every other spring by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Officials will use the Oklahoma results in developing public health policies and programs, state Health Commissioner Mike Crutcher said.

"These data provide a foundation for us to develop coordinated school health programs that reinforce positive behaviors, help students make smart choices and support learning and success in school," he said.

The report surveyed students on their use of alcohol, drugs and tobacco, sexual behavior, weapons, diet and exercise.

According to survey results about 51 percent of males and 49 percent of females said they've had sex.

Of those, 15.6 percent said they've had more than four partners. Nearly 6 percent said they had sex before the age of 13.

Nearly two-thirds of the students polled say they've tried cigarettes and about 26 percent currently smoke.

Almost half of all students (47.8 percent) said they have drank alcohol in the previous 30 days.

About one-third of all students have drank five or more drinks within two hours.

Survey results show that 22 percent of students say they have been offered, sold or given illegal drugs on school property.

About 13 percent of males and 2.5 percent of females have carried a gun, knife or club to school in the previous 30 days.

The survey also found that nearly 16 percent of students are overweight as measured by body mass index, and 12.5 percent are at risk of obesity.
